  • Slovenia Sun Trail – around the Karst region, 7 days

– Total walking distance: 116 km.
– Departure: any day (except Wednesdays) between 30th March and 12th October. 
Program details:

Day 1: ARRIVAL to Postojna, hotel 4*.

Day 2: Postojna – Hudičevec agritourismo: 20 km
Starting early, you will be transferred by car to the world famous Postojna Caves, a vast and superb example of the hundreds of intricate caves systems that have been carved into the limestone hills over millions of years ago in this unique world of Karst. Covering a total of 21 km this is the most extensive cave system in Slovenia. A guide will take you on a 1½ hour tour through a fairytale maze of gargantuan stalactites and stalagmites and a myriad of colours. You will continue your hike to the nearby village of Predjama with a Predjama castle built in a 123-metre high cliff. From there you will continue your hike through gorgeous summer meadows towards the imposing backdrop of Nanos Mountain, where you will spend the night in a tourist farm known for home cooking and its local wine.

Day 3: Hudičevec agritourism – slap pri Vipavi: 20 km
A trekking walk along the typical Karst landscape of pine tree forests caverns and stone fenced fields: After breakfast you will be transferred by car to the village of Podnanos, which literally means ‘under Nanos’. The village lies in the upper Vipava Valley, known for its exquisite wines and vineyard laden hills. Podnanos is a classic example of a typical Primorska village built around the Church of Saint Helene. Clearly visible above the village is a well preserved defence tower from the days when the Venetians ruled the area. Your walk will start from here. As you continue on towards the small village of Slap there are many interesting castles to visit along the way.  Accommodation in a 2* country inn.

Day 4: Slap pri vipavi – Štanjel: 17 km
A walk with panoramic views of the vineyards that sprawl across the surrounding valley. The rest of the trail partially follows a marked path and small country tracks running above the Vipava valley to the village of Štanjel.
Main attractions: Slap pri Vipavi, a small hillside village is also noted for establishing the first ever wine and fruit growing school in Slovenia. You can visit a local artist and painter; try the food in the local hotel: delicious Karst ham (pršut) and tasty wine from one of the many nearby domestic cellars. On a hilltop overlooking the town is the magnificent Štanjel Castle, built to defend the area against invading Turks. Accommodation in a 2* country inn.


Hiking in the countryside

Day 5: Štanjel – TOMAJ – Štorje: 20 km
Today you head southwards to a quaint little village particularly famous for its perfect climatic conditions. Kopriva is ideal for preparing and air-drying the famous karst ham (Pršut). In the limestone village of Kodrovi you’ll find an interesting row of unique Mediterranean-style houses with entrances into barrel – vaulted cellars. In the town friary there is a precious library containing books in thirty-seven different languages, some dating from the 1600s. Next you walk along local forest roads and trails. The soil around Tomaj is especially suitable for growing the Refošk grape, which is used to produce the excellent Teran and Refošk wines. Here you can take a guided tour and learn all about the process of making the special karst ham, as world famous as Prosciutto.Accommodation in a tourist farm 2*.

Day 6: Štorje – Lipica – Trieste: 20 km; and 10 km by a horse drawn carriage
Main attractions: For your final day you will be transported to Lipica by a horse and carriage. You can visit the Lipica famous stud farm, with beautiful well known thoroughbred horses. From Villa Opicina you can descend to Trieste by the famous cable car.

Day 7: Departure after breakfast.

Price: 610 € per person

Price includes: 6 nights accommodation in a double room with WC and shower, on the basis of bed & breakfast, transfer on days 3, transfer, horse drawn carriage on day 6, luggage transport between hotels (one piece per person), information package including detailed route description with corresponding maps (one per room), welcome meeting upon arrival, backup service (hotline) during the walk, GPS data.

Supplements: halfboard 130 EUR, entrance fees, single room 120 €. For optional visit of Postojna Caves and a guided walk: 75 EUR per person, two persons minimum.
